The importance of the turnover battle
Every football fan knows about the crucial importance of the turnover battle in a football game. However, they could be even more crucial on Sunday afternoon when the Stampeders visit the Alouettes. During the 2014 season, both teams lost every single game where they committed more turnovers than their adversary.
The Alouettes will have to find a way to force Calgary to commit mental mistakes because the Stampeders lead the league with only 14 turnovers committed since the beginning of the 2014 season. The good news is that only 3 teams forced more turnovers than the Alouettes this season in the CFL. The personnel is in place, now they only have to execute in front of their home crowd.
A match between elite lines
Turnovers are often created or helped by pressure in the backfield. This will be interesting because this game should offer the fans great battles in the trenches. The Stampeders and the Alouettes have 2 of the 3 best sack differentials in the CFL this season. That means that the four lines in action on Sunday afternoon have proven their quality and that they will get to test their abilities against the best.
The Alouettes defensive line, that can count on Gabriel Knapton and his 8 sacks in the last 4 games, has their work cut out for themselves against Calgary. The Stamps have only allowed a sack every 24,9 dropbacks this season, which leads the CFL.
Thankfully for Montreal, the Stampeders defensive line shouldn’t have a picnic either. The Alouettes offensive line allows a sack every 15,6 dropbacks, which ranks them 3rd in the league.
A game with two winning starting quarterbacks
The two quarterbacks that will be starting Sunday’s game, Jonathan Crompton (2-1) and Drew Tate (6-2) in relief of the injured Bo Levi Mitchell, have both won two thirds of their CFL starts until now. Even more interesting, none of them has lost a home start in Canada yet. Technically, that gives the edge to Crompton for Sunday’s game.
Sean Whyte is going streaking
Sean Whyte has now made his last 7 field goal attempts. This streak is currently the 2nd longest in the CFL behind Argonauts kicker Swayze Waters who has made his last 10 field goal attempts. The most impressive thing about Whyte’s streak is that he built it on long field goals like he has done all season for the Alouettes. Whyte currently has the CFL’s longest average of made field goals. His made field goals have an average yardage of 33,7 yards this season.
Milestones to watch for
-
Brandon Whitaker’s 4th carry on Sunday afternoon will be the 600th of his CFL career.
-
Gabriel Knapton will try to record a quarterback sack for a 5th consecutive game.
-
The international receiver Brandon London is 88 receiving yards away from the 2000 milestone with the Alouettes.
-
Marc-Olivier Brouillette’s next tackle will make the 2014 season the most productive of his CFL career.
-
John Bowman is 4 quarterback sacks away from the top 20 of all-time in the CFL. He has 78 in his career with the Alouettes.
