MONTREAL – Following an inspiring outing against the Ottawa REDBLACKS last Friday night, Montreal Alouettes’ linebacker Bear Woods was named defensive player of the week in the CFL.
Locked in a defensive match-up, Woods performed brilliantly, recording nine tackles, including one sack, en route to a 15-7 Montreal victory. The 27-year-old international linebacker was a key contributor for the Alouettes defence. He also forced REDBLACKS quarterback Henry Burris to fumble, stripping him of the ball, which was then recovered by his teammate Aaron Lavarias. He subsequently gave the ball to Chip Cox who ran the ball back for 55 yards, tallying the night’s lone touchdown for his team.
Along with his teammates, Woods paced the REDBLACKS offence to only one touchdown score. Montreal’s defence took a stand on five separate attempts at their own 1-yard line, remarkably preventing Ottawa from scoring each time. Woods himself stopped Ottawa’s quaterback Henry Burris during one of these attempts.
This is the second defensive honour earned this month by Bear Woods, who was also named the defensive player of the week after recording a career-high ten defensive tackles, including two sacks, in a home win against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on September 7 at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium.
The Macclenny, FL native began the season on the six-game injured list but has since rapidly become a crucial element in assistant head coach and defensive coordinator Noel Thorpe’s defence.
