Alouettes add six players to the practice roster

MONTREAL – The Montreal Alouettes announced on Monday that the club has added, defensive end David Gilbert, defensive tackle Corey Grissom, offensive tackle Ty Nsekhe, running back Chris Rainey, defensive end D.J. Roberts as well as cornerback Bryan Shepherd to the team’s practice roster.

Gilbert (6’04”, 254 lbs.) started his college career with the of the University of Wisconsin Badgers, before transferring to University of Miami Hurricanes for his senior year where he recorded 10 tackles and 1.5 tackles for losses, while recovering two fumbles, including one he returned for 72 yards. He completed his college career with 89 tackles, 9 sacks, 4 forced fumbles and 3 fumble recoveries. The 22-year-old defensive end was signed by the Tennessee Titans in May.

Grissom (6’2″, 316 lbs.) suited up for the University of South Florida Bulls for five seasons where he tallied 105 tackles in 46 outings. He was named on the second team All-Big East selection in 2012. The 24-year-old defensive tackle joined the New England Patriots as a free agent in 2013. The La Grange, GA native also spent some time with the Kansas City Chiefs and the Miami Dolphins in 2014.

Nsekhe (6’08”, 325 lbs.) played for the Texas State University Bobcats. Following his college career, the now 28-year-old suited up for the Corpus Christi Sharks in the AF2 before joining the AFL in 2009. The six-foot 8 giant suited up with the Dallas Vigilantes, Philadelphia Soul and San Antonio Talons. The Arlington, TX native then joined the NFL paying for the Indianapolis Colts and the St. Louis Rams in 2012. He had recently signed a contract with the New Orleans Saints before joining the Alouettes.

Rainey (5’08”, 190 lbs.) suited up for five seasons with the University of Florida Gators where he played a total of 52 games. There, he amassed an impressive total of 2,464 rushing yards and thirteen touchdowns in 396 rushing attempts while adding 795 receiving yards and six touchdowns on 69 catches. The 26-year-old Lakeland, FL native was named to the 2011 first-team All-SEC. He was the Pittsburgh Steelers fifth-round draft-pick in the 2012 NFL draft. He also suited up for the Indianapolis Colts and Arizona Cardinals in 2014.

Roberts (6’01”, 250 lbs.) suited up for the University of Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks where he recorded 53 career tackles. The 23-year-old defensive end also earned All-OVC second team honours in 2012, ranking third in the conference with 11.5 tackles for loss.  Roberts joined the Baltimore Ravens earlier this year. He completed his college career with 53 tackles, 11 quarterback hurries, 3.5 sacs and two fumble recoveries.

Shepherd (5’10”, 180) started his career as a cornerback for the University Nebraska-Omaha program before joining the North Dakota State University Bisons where he suited up for 37 games including three consecutives NCAA Division 1 FCS National Championship games which the Bisons won. During his senior season in 2013, he amassed 52 tackles (including 28 solo) and broke up three passes while making one interception. The 23-year-old native from Olathe, Kansas joined the Washington Redskins as a free agent in May 2014
