No team has more quarterback sacks than the Alouettes this season in the East division. This performance has been helped by the versatility of multiple defensive players that are doing great work under defensive coordinator Noel Thorpe.
On Saturday, when the Alouettes face up against the Toronto Argonauts, 3 of those defensive players (John Bowman, Chip Cox and Bear Woods) will try to record a quarterback sack in a 3rd straight game. In total, those 3 players recorded 7 sacks in the last 2 games.
The importance to keep your quarterback on his feet
This week-end, those pass rushers will face a great challenge. Since the start of the season, the Argonauts offensive line is ranked 3rd in the league for their frequency to allow sacks. They only allow opposing teams to sack their quarterback every 15,7 dropbacks. This isn’t too far from Montreal’s offensive line that currently ranks 2nd with one sack per 17 dropbacks.
The excellent play of their line allow the Alouettes to have an edge versus Toronto in the trenches. This year, both teams recorded about as many sacks (41-38 in favor of Montreal) but the Alouettes have allowed their quarterbacks to be taken down 28 times behind the line of scrimmage. That scenario happened 36 times to Toronto so far this year.
Even better, the line actually got better in their last 6 games, which coincides with the arrival of Jonathan Crompton as the team starting quarterback. Crompton only got taken down on 4% of his dropbacks this year. No quarterback has been sacked less frequently than Crompton in the CFL this year.
Winning beginnings for Crompton
Crompton is taking full advantage of this protection and he’s leading the team to victory. Since his arrival as starting quarterback, the team has a 5-1 record. Only one quarterback in the CFL has a better winning percentage while playing the most game as the team starting quarterback (Bo Levi Mitchell of the Calgary Stampeders).
Taking advantage of those turnovers
The Alouettes defense isn’t only good to rush the passer. They are also pretty good to force turnovers. The team is currently sitting in 2nd place with 34 turnovers. Furthermore, the offensive unit has been able to produce points out of these turnovers. This season, Montreal scored 90 points after forcing a turnover. That’s 21 points more than the 2nd best team in the East division on that front which the Alouettes will be facing on Saturday; the Toronto Argonauts.
- Brandon London only needs 2 receiving yards to get to 2000 in his career with the Alouettes.
- Sean Whyte is 3 PAT away from his 200th in the CFL.
- John Bowman is 2 quarterback sacks away from getting into the top 20 on the all-time CFL career sacks list.
- Tyrell Sutton is 8 carries away from his 100th in the Montreal Alouettes uniform.
- With 2 more defensive tackles, Alan-Michael Cash will have the best season of his CFL career.
