“I want to win. I want to win more than anyone else when I’m out there. I like to be firing on all cylinders.”
Until further notice, Tyrell Sutton is the “man” moving forward in the backfield for the Montreal Alouettes.

The team has chance to make their place in history this season. In CFL history, no team has finished the season with a .500 record or better after being 6 games under .500 at some point in the season. The Alouettes started the year with a 1-7 record and they followed it up by winning 6 of their last 7 games. That streak helped to get closer to .500 as their record is currently 7-8 with 3 games left in the regular season.
The arrival of Jonathan Crompton behind the center surely helped but he’s not the only reason for Montreal’s recent success. Since his arrival as the team’s starting quarterback, the Alouettes have only allowed 6 quarterback sacks. For comparison’s sake, in the team’s first 8 games, that number was 23.
We can see the same trend when we look at the turnovers. During Montreal’s first 8 games, their turnover differential was -9. Since Crompton started, the team has a +13 turnover differential.
Crompton, the first since 1976-77
While we’re on the subject, Jonathan Crompton’s 6-1 record to start his CFL career is remarkable. The only other quarterback to maintain that record in his 7 first games with the Alouettes was Joe Barnes in 1976-77. Even Anthony Calvillo, whose number has been retired recently, didn’t do better than that going 5-2 in his 7 first games in the Alouettes uniform.
Keep the streak alive
The Alouettes seem to always find a way to beat Ottawa in the CFL. Montreal has won their last 4 games against Ottawa’s teams. 2 of those wins were this season and the 2 others were against the Ottawa Renegades. It was also against the Renegades that they lost their last CFL game against Ottawa. It was on July 1st 2005 and the Alouettes lost an offensive shootout 39 to 36.
High flying birds
The last Alouettes 3 games winning streak away from home was on July 28th 2006. They will have a chance to change that against the REDBLACKS in Ottawa. It’s also against Ottawa that the Alouettes started their current streak on September 26th.
- John Bowman’s next quarterback sack will allow him to get to the top 20 on the list of all-time CFL leaders for career sacks. He’s currently sitting in 21st place with 81 sacks.
- Sean Whyte made his last 18 field goal attempts. This is the 2nd longest streak of his career. He’ll try to get closer to his personal best, which is the streak of 24 consecutive field goals he had in 2011.
- Those streaks allowed Whyte to become the 29th best scorer in the history of the CFL. He currently has 790 career points. Whyte is only 9 points away from Matt Kellett who’s sitting in 28th place.
- Chip Cox is one fumble recovery away from being the player with the most fumble recoveries in CFL history.
- Bear Woods will try to record 7 defensive tackles or more in a 4th straight game. If he does that against the REDBLACKS, it would be the 6th game out of 7 in which he recorded that much tackles.
The end of season is approaching and the ranking is increasingly tightens. First place in the Eastern division could mean direct access to a playoff game at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium.
