MONTREAL – Montreal Alouettes’ defensive back Jerald Brown was named the CFL’s Defensive Player of the Week after an inspiring outing in the Eastern Semi-Final on Sunday at McGill Stadium. The six-season veteran played a key role in Alouettes’ convincing 50-17 victory over the BC Lions. This spectacular effort allows the Alouettes to move on to Hamilton on Sunday to face the Tiger-Cats in the Eastern Division Final.
In a crucial sudden death meeting, Jerald Brown led the Alouettes’ threatful defensive squad to a flawless performance, setting the tone early in the game and limiting both BC pivots to 102 passing yards. The Washington, DC native recorded five defensive tackles as well as an interception on Kevin Glenn while also knocking down a pass. Brown etched his name in the Alouettes’ record book with a 103 yards fumble return, which is a new team record for a playoff game. He surpassed Elfrid Peyton’s previous fumble return mark of 30 yards against these same Lions in 1997.
In 17 games in 2014, the 33 year-old athlete concluded his sensational campaign with a total of 65 defensive tackles which is good for the 18th rank among the CFL defensive players. That places him third on the Alouettes, behind teammates Chip Cox and Bear Woods. Brown was selected on the East-Division All-Star Team this season.
