MONTREAL – The Montreal Alouettes announced on Monday that veteran defensive back Jerald Brown has agreed to a new one-year contract with the club. Brown will suit up for its seventh season as an Alouette.
Brown (5’11”, 185 lbs.) once again enjoyed a successful 2014 season with the Alouettes. A real leader within the team’s defensive squad, Brown yet again showcased his abilities last year putting up great numbers. The 34-year old veteran finished third on the team with 65 defensive tackles, including one sack, behind teammates Bear Woods (89) and Chip Cox (73) respectively. Very effective in all defensive coverages, Brown had four knockdowns during the season in addition to highly contributing to a defensive unit that lead the CFL with 47 turnovers. The former Glenville State University Pioneer also made one interception while returning four fumbles and forcing two.
“Jerald in an important cog in our defensive system and our team,” said Alouettes General Manager Jim Popp. “Since his arrival seven years ago, he stepped into a starting role and has performed at a high level at one of the more difficult positions in the CFL. He has brought leadership, physicality, and a true professional work ethic on a daily basis.”
Brown literally lifted his game up a notch in both playoff games. He had an amazing outing in the Eastern semifinal against the BC Lions where he collected five defensive tackles and added an interception as well as a knockdown. Brown also rewrote the Alouettes’ playoff record book with a 103-yard fumble return for the major. The Washington, DC native then added five defensive tackles during the Eastern Final against the Tiger-Cats in Hamilton a week later.
This signing adds to the stability the team can look to on defence in 2015, as the club has also inked star linebackers Bear Woods and Chip Cox to new deals, as well as Winston Venable, Aaron Lavarias and Scott Paxson.
