MONTREAL – The Montreal Alouettes have created the Anthony Calvillo Leadership Academy for Quarterbacks which will see pro-football’s all-time leading passer share his knowledge, tricks of the trade and much more to Quebec’s young quarterbacks.
During two weekends in February, Calvillo will groom quarterbacks from Quebec universities (February 14-15) before doing the same with the Cegep level pivots (February 21-22).
Calvillo, who joined the Alouettes coaching staff a few weeks ago, will share his knowledge of the game with these young quarterbacks as well as helping them with their mental and physical preparation, nutrition, and much more.
“It has always been important for the Alouettes to give back to amateur football and this marks another of our organization’s initiatives to help young football players in the province of Quebec,” declared Alouettes President and C.E.O. Mark Weightman. “We want to allow quarterbacks in Quebec to learn as much as possible from one of the CFL’s all-time best quarterbacks and our goal is that the next Canadian quarterback to play in the CFL comes from Quebec. With this Academy, we want our province to be know for the strength of our quarterbacks.”
The universities and Cegeps’ head coaches, offensive coordinators and quarterbacks coaches have also been invited to attend the Academy, which will be split into sessions that will take place on and off the field.
“The main reason that pushed me to become a coach is to share what I’ve learned throughout my career with the players. I believe coaches have a great influence on the players, from atom football all the way up to the pros,” said Calvillo. “It is a great pleasure for me to help these young players from my adoptive province to become the best football players they can be.”
Most university teams from Quebec have confirmed the presence of two of their quarterbacks, while more than 20 Cegep teams will be sending their pivots as well. The Alouettes also plan on adding a weekend for high school quarterbacks in the near future. Over the past few seasons, CIS teams from the Quebec Conference have been invited to send one of their quarterbacks to training camp with the Alouettes, where they have been able to partake in team meetings as well as practice.
The Alouettes are committed to develop and expand minor football. The team will conduct its second annual Coaching Clinic on March 14-15, while the Bruno Heppell Elite Football Camp will host over 100 players from March 1-6. The Alouettes junior camp is scheduled on May 16-17.
