Combine: Focus shifts east for Montreal regional

CFL.ca Staff

MONTREAL – A busy week of evaluating some of the country’s top prospects continues on Wednesday, as the focus shifts east to Montreal for this week’s second regional combine.

A total of 44 draft-eligible prospects will take part in a series of tests, measurements and one-on-one drills, with the most successful getting an invite to Toronto for the 2015 CFL National Combine on March 27-29.

Wednesday’s combine in Montreal is the second of three leading up to the big ticket event in Toronto over the weekend, as prospects get another chance to drive their stock and eventually join a CFL roster on draft day.

In 2014, five Montreal regional combine participants were added to the National Roster. Four of five were drafted, headlined by the Argos’ Alexandre Dupuis, taken at the bottom of the fourth round. Laval running back Guillaume Bourassa, Condordia’s Travis Bent and Saint Mary’s Nigel Romick were also drafted, while receiver Francis Lapointe was invited but went undrafted.

Wednesday’s regional combine will also include seven national free agents and international free agents who play in the CIS – none of whom will be eligible for the draft and therefore cannot receive an invitation to the National Combine.

By the Numbers:

– Of the 51 currently on the Montreal regional combine roster, 44 are draft eligible.

– The competition among receivers and defensive backs could be fiercest, as the roster includes 12 receivers and 12 defensive backs. Wednesday’s combine also features two quarterbacks and two kickers.

– Sherbrooke will dominate in attentance at the combine, with 11 players suiting up with Vert et Or on their helmets. That’s the highest representation for any school in any of the three regional combines. Bishop’s weighs in with seven while Montreal has six and Laval has five.
