Training Camp Report – Day 1

Montrealalouettes.com

Sherbrooke – The rain and the cold in no way dampered the enthusiasm of the Montreal Alouettes players and coaches who took to Bishop University’s Coulter Field Sunday morning for the first two practices of the 2015 training camp.

The intensity was palpable as there is great competition at many different positions.

“The first day of practice was a great start,” said Alouettes head coach, Tom Higgins. “I don’t know that we looked like that at any time last year during training camp and that is because of the continuity we have with the coaching staff and the players. There is a really nice attitude and now we just got to keep on working.”

Playing with a wet ball, many receivers had difficulties holding on to the pigskin on what would normally be routine catches, but that did not stop Alex Charette, Fred Stamps, and Nick Lewis to showcase their skill and make catches that lifted the crowd on hand.

On defence, Billy Parker and Daryl Townsend were responsible for a few knockdowns each, while, rookie safety Avery Cunningham intercepted a pass, which he returned for a touchdown.

University coaches in attendance
The Alouettes once again invited various Quebec University coaches to attend this year’s training camp. On opening day, several made their way to Bishop’s grounds, including Dany Maciocia from the Université de Montreal Carabins as well as Mathieu Bertrand and Carl Brennan from the Université Laval Rouge et Or.

Quarterbacks too
Quebec University quarterbacks also participated in today’s practices as part of a special training. Mathieu Loranger (Sherbrooke), Trenton Miller (Concordia), Marc-Antoine Langevin (Laval) and Scott Borden (St. Mary’s) had the opportunity to take part in the team’s drills. They also participated in last week’s rookie camp and have been able to gain knowledge from the Alouettes current quarterbacks.

Tomorrow
The 2015 Alouettes Training Camp will continue tomorrow at Coulter Field, as the team will partake in two consecutive practices beginning at 7:30 a.m.
