Sherbrooke – The rain stopped and the Montreal Alouettes’ players were finally back on Coulter Field at Bishop’s University for the fourth day of the 2015 training camp. Competition gets fiercer from day-to-day, while rookies are giving it there all to impress Tom Higgins’ coaching staff.
The defense already in “Beast Mode”
Since the beginning of camp, many Alouettes’ defensive players managed to stand out by creating numerous turnovers or by just being incredibly effective in different coverages. The unit’s work ethic led by defensive coordinator Noel Thorpe seems impenetrable as each play is treated as if it were game-day.
Wednesday’s notable defensive player, cornerback Mitchel White, was turning heads, making outstanding defensive coverage and even making three interceptions. His consistent performance at training camp has him as a serious contender for a starting position in the backfield of Thorpe’s defense.
“All the extra effort you put in eventually becomes a habit, which can make the difference at the end. During training camp, it is important to re-establish a rhythm, to find your bearings as well as renewing the good habits for this upcoming season”, said White following practice.
Stiff competition at the kicking position
A very interesting competition is unfolding these days at training camp for the starting kicker position as former Université Laval Rouge et Or kicker Boris Bede is attempting to surpass veteran Sean Whyte, owner of many club records.
Veteran presence in today’s session
All-Star linebacker Bear Woods notched his second interception of training camp, while receiver Samuel Giguère continued his stellar performance, catching a superb pass for his second major of the week. Offensive linemen Jeff Perrett, Josh Bourke, and Luc Brodeur-Jourdain have been offering solid performances since the beginning of training camp. Nothing less is expected from key players inside one of the country’s most effective offensive lines.
Intra-squad game on June 7 in Saint-Hubert
This year, the Alouettes will be holding their annual intra-squad game presented by TELUS starting at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 7 at Parc Rosanne-Laflamme (7405 Terrasse du Centre in St-Hubert). The Alouettes faithful can expect a fun-filled day as they will have the opportunity to meet their favourite players and coaches. The cheerleaders and Mascot Touché! will also be on site to ensure another great Alouettes fan get together! Access to the intra-squad game is free for all.
London retires
International wide receiver Brandon London announced on Wednesday that he was retiring from professional football. The 30-year-old played four seasons in the CFL, all with the Alouettes, where he cumulated 2,192 yards on 138 receptions while scoring eight touchdowns. He had his most productive season in 2012 when he amassed 848 yards on 44 catches, including three for touchdowns.
Tomorrow
The 2015 Alouettes’ Training Camp will continue tomorrow at Coulter Field, as the team will take part in back-to-back training sessions beginning at 7h50.
