Training Camp Report – Day 7

Montrealalouettes.com

Sherbrooke – There are many ongoing battles during the Alouettes 2015 training camp and the running back position is no stranger to that situation.

After completing the 2014 on the injured list, veteran Brandon Whitaker is back on the field doing what he does best, which is pretty much everything a running back needs to do. Tyrell Sutton and Brandon Rutley, carried the load in his absence are also very much in the mix and aiming for the starter’s job.

Chris Rainey and Stefan Logan are also contenders, all while being used as kick returners. Recent newcomer Jewel Hampton has also been displaying his talent and making a case for himself.

These running backs have all proved that they can run and catch, but their ability to block in a pass-happy league could very well determine what the final roster will look like at the end of camp. That is why a good chunk of individual drills on Saturday consisted of one-on-one blocking drills between running backs and linebackers.

International linebacker Avery Cunningham pilfered another pass on Saturday, as he was able to grab hold of a ball that previously deflected off of Chris Thompson and Cody Hoffman.

Head coach Tom Higgins was a popular man with his players on this seventh day of training camp as he sent them to the swimming pool at Bishop’s University instead of having them stay on the field for a second practice.
