Training Camp Report – Day 16

Montrealalouettes.com

Sherbrooke – Alouettes players were back on Bishop’s University’s Coulter Field on Monday morning for a single practice on the sixteenth day of training camp. Tom Higgins’ protégés went back to work following the team’s victory over the Ottawa REDBLACKS Saturday night in Quebec City. Less than a week from the preseason opener in Montreal against the Toronto Argonauts, Alouettes players were at full throttle on Monday morning, working relentlessly on small details.

Cleared and focus

Newcomer Dan LeFevour is set to see action with his new team for the first time on Thursday night. The quarterback didn’t practice during the first days of camp, rehabilitating a knee injury that now seems fully healed. The American pivot experienced once again strong moments showing ease and control during practice. He ran through the Alouettes’ defensive unit for a gain of 20-yard. He also connected with young receiver Cody Hoffman a few times, including a superb 25-yard throw for the touchdown. Stakes are high for LeFevour as he wants to come back on top of his game. Based on his performance so far at training camp, he is focused on the job and ready for action.

Harder, bigger, faster, stronger

Players were going at it hard on this second to last practice of training camp as the pace and speed were strong and cohesion between teammates is becoming increasingly evident. Rookies Jacob Ruby, Boris Bede, Brandon Bridge and Alex Charrette continue to shuffle cards, putting up strong performances. Bridge and Charrette were a dynamic duo to be reckoned with on the field, as Charrette caught a few passes from the Canadian quarterback, including an outstanding 30-yard throw that Charrette hauled in for a score. The Alouettes’ backfield is currently in the middle of a four-way battle as running backs Brandon Whitaker, Tyrell Sutton, Brandon Rutley and Stefan Logan are fighting fiercely for every inch they can get, while veteran offensive and defensive linemen were fine-tuning their games.

Defence

Cornerback Cliff Coleman probably had his best performance so far with two knockdowns, including one he literally deflected with his fingertip. Veteran linebacker Chip Cox hasn’t lost his good habits, as he also came up big with a knockdown. A true leader on the field, he displayed a contagious mix of calm and self-confidence that reflected on the entire squad. Mitchell White recorded his fifth interception of the camp. At the dawn of his second season as a member of the Alouettes, the former Michigan State alum has been dominant and consistent.
