CFL.ca staff

Ottawa – Tonight’s game was a exciting and a very tight one, but the REDBLACKS earn the victory by a score of 26-23 over the Montreal Alouettes.

Rakeem Cato was 20-for-31 and 303 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions in the losing effort.

Montreal moved to within field goal range on their opening drive, but Boris Bede missed a long 54-yard field goal attempt and the Alouettes were forced to settle for a single after the REDBLACKS chose to take a knee in the end zone.

Bede redeemed himself on the Alouettes next possession by kicking an 18-yard field goal to narrow the lead to 7-4 with 13:51 remaining before the half.

After a three and out, the REDBLACKS were forced to punt away the ball and Montreal was sure to capitalize on their field position. Cato continued his impressive rookie season by rushing 19 yards into the end zone for his first career touchdown to give the Alouettes their first lead of the game.

Montreal also added a single in the second quarter to end the half at 12-7.

Not wanting to give Ottawa a chance to get back into the game, Cato connected with Fred Stamps for 54 yards on the second play of the following drive to put Montreal at the Ottawa 20-yard line.

The back and fourth action continued when Montreal received the ball back on the next possession.  Cato connected with Alex Charette for a 20-yard pass.  The play helped set up Boris Bede’s second field goal of the game from 42 yards out to narrow in on Ottawa’s 17-15 lead.

An Ottawa three and out put the ball back in the hands of the Alouettes.

Cato led the charge up the field and found Jean-Christophe Beaulieu for a 37-yard play to put Montreal at the Ottawa 37.  Six plays later, Cato found Samuel Giguere for a touchdown to continue the exchange of leads and put the Montreal up 22-17 with 9:25 remaining.

Montreal would add another single and the REDBLACKS added a safety to put the game at 23-19.
