Training camp report – Day 14

It was the 14th day of training camp on Sunday and the team received a nice infusion of energy thanks to the return of veteran defensive end John Bowman, who is entering his 14th season in the CFL.

The defensive end took part in his first practice of training camp on Sunday morning, as he was allowed to take some time off following the negotiation of the latest collective bargaining agreement. After only being able to watch practice, one of the team’s most respected warriors was finally able to suit up in his helmet and shoulder pads.

“There was definitely more energy out there. You could feel the defence was more inspired and was able to put more pressure and force us to be quicker. He’s our defensive leader and having him out there made us all better today and we need to continue building on that, “ declared Alouettes offensive lineman and longtime teammate of Bowman, Kristian Matte.

The seasoned veteran feels ready for the next season, which is just about to get under way.

“As much as I was happy to stay off my feet and rest, I felt much better out there on the field with my teammates. We have a lot of unfinished business out there and today was a step in the right direction. I like what I see on the field and in the locker room and am blessed to be a part of it,” said Bowman.

Transactions

The Alouettes have added national running back Shaquille Murray-Lawrence to the roster. The club released international defensive lineman Latarius Brady as well as international offensive lineman Josh Cleveland.

Rapid Fire

Quarterback Hugo Richard took on a few more repetitions during Sunday’s practice. The coaching staff is expecting to use all the quarterbacks on the roster on Thursday night’s game, including the former Université Laval Rouge et Or pivot… Linebacker Greg Reid is doing well in camp. On Sunday, he made a nice play when he welcomed receiver Andrew Verboys with a swift hit of the shoulder following a short completion… Marcus Cromartie made a nice interception when he dove following a tipped ball that receiver Zac Parker wasn’t able to maintain possession of the ball… Antonio Pipkin and William Stanback continue to build their chemistry as they make hand offs and fake hand offs look easy… The team continued to practice hard even though rain invited itself towards the end of the session.

He said it

“Every team will get an extra boost when a player of the caliber of John Bowman comes back on the field. You can see his leadership immediately. When he talks to others, everyone listens. He is very talented and he is such a technician. Age doesn’t matter. This guy can win football games with his experience and knowledge. He told his teammates today he was back for the love of the game and it shows when he is out there.”
