Three Key Elements of Saturday’s Game Against the Eskimos

This Saturday, at McGill Stadium, our Alouettes could get their third consecutive win for the first time since 2016 as they take on the Edmonton Eskimos! Ladies and gents, we should have ourselves a game!

We’re helping you get mentally prepared with these three key elements to watch out for on the field:

1-The Run Game

William Stanback could become the first Montreal player to rush for more than 100 yards three games in a row since Avon Cobourne in 2008. The running back proved himself to be particularly useful in the team’s wins against Hamilton and Ottawa, but he will be facing one of the biggest defensive lines – featuring Almondo Sewell – of the league on Saturday. Let’s not forget, however, that Will ran for a respectable 76 yards in nine carries the last time our group faced the Eskimos. As a matter of fact, the whole team put up a great fight in Week 1, losing by one possession only (32-25) in hostile territory.

At returner, newcomer Marcus Taylor could be a stunner. Taking over for Stef Logan who was released earlier this week, Marcus showed off his great speed at practice. Our special teams haven’t returned the ball to the house so far this season; could that stat change with the arrival of our young 22-year-old returner? We shall see.

2-Pressure on Harris

Trevor Harris currently holds the number two spot in the CFL for passing yards. The highly productive quarterback and his offensive unit gained an impressive total of 608 yards against our defence in game 1. Bob Slowik wasn’t too happy that day, but credit where credit is due, the DC is a quick learner. His guys haven’t stopped progressing since the beginning of the season, in terms of coverage and pressure. Known for his rapid fire and ability to find holes, Trevor Harris doesn’t, however, react very well to pressure. The work done by the defensive line and linebackers, particularly Chris Ackie whose size and agility could pose a threat to Harris, will be a determining factor in this game.

The defensive backs, on the other hand, will be taking on the great challenge that is picking off Harris’ passes. The Eskimos QB has not thrown a single interception since the start of the 2019 season.

3-The Remodeled Receiving Squad

Geno Lewis will be our veteran receiver on Saturday! “It motivates me because I know the guys are counting me. I’m not the type to talk a lot though, even if I’m in a leader’s position. I let my actions speak for themselves.”

Geno, who got his groove back in Ottawa making three huge catches for 59 yards, will be the most seasoned receiver of the young and explosive group that will be lining up against the Eskimos defence tomorrow. In action: Jake Wieneke, who already has two touchdowns under his belt, Quan Bray, whose connexion with Vernon Adams Jr was out of this world in the last two games, Malcolm Carter, our giant Canadian who could be a tough matchup for the Esks secondary and most likely one of two rookies, Marcus Taylor or Zac Parker. It’s been seen before: young players can be especially fired up for their first game. We wouldn’t be surprised to see them catching the Esks’ defence off guard.
