Monday was another important day for the 2021 season… Indeed, a dozen of our players, coaches and staff members were vaccinated at the Olympic Stadium vaccination centre, an initiative of the CIUSSS de l’Est-de-l’Ile-de-Montréal. Uur ambassador Anthony Calvillo and the Minister for Education and Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, Isabelle Charest were on hand for the event.
As we all know, vaccination is essential in order to give ourselves every chance to have a maximum of fans in the stands in August. And it is no secret that the rate of vaccination in Quebec and across the country leaves us very optimistic that this will happen.
Among those who were present, our Offensive Line Coach Luc Brodeur-Jourdain, who had the privilege of being vaccinated under the cameras, wanted to set an example. “In the economic context of the CFL, we need to have our supporters with us in the stands, to be with them for the games,” supported the former offensive lineman. “As long as there are no safe precautions for our fans, it makes things more difficult and extremely limited. So we need to encourage vaccination.”
Younger players also agree. Marc-Antoine Dequoy also received their first shot on Monday.
“I think it’s a civic duty”, started the 26-year-old defensive back. “I just can’t wait to get back to normal, see family, friends, and get back to a pre-COVID situation. Of course, there are things that will have changed.”
Young people who have come to lead the way towards a return to a more normal life. “The players here today are all from a rather young generation, under the age of 25. It’s a good signal. If there are any who are hesitating, seeing healthy athletes who have confidence is encouraging,” said our President Mario Cecchini.
So is it a possibility to see a large majority of our players vaccinated at the beginning of training camp in July? It is a real possibility according to our General Manager Danny Maciocia. “We talk a lot with players and coaches, and we strongly encourage them to get vaccinated. You know that in the United States, things move a little faster. Many of our players are 100% vaccinated, including our quarterback Vernon Adams Jr, who received his two doses.”
On this day almost of 75% of the Quebecers have received a first dose or have an appointment to receive it. Congratulations to our players, coaches and staff who came to participate in this positive day towards a return to a more normal life. This is also a good step in the direction of a 2021 football season with those who we have missed enormously for way too long: our fans.
