“I am no longer a rookie, I have gained confidence in my game”
During the 2019 season, Jake Wieneke “delivered” on the field in his first campaign in the nest. Not only was he in uniform for all 18-games but he excelled by scoring eight majors, good for fifth position in the CFL, in addition of making 41 catches for 569 yards.
We knew that the American receiver was good but he surprised many experts with a performance among the greats. The 26-year-old from Maple Grove, MN, showed the football world why he excelled in college with the South Dakota State University Jackrabbits. In four campaigns in the NCAA, the receiver registered three seasons of more than 1,000 yards and one of 965. You are still not impressed? Perfect, how about his 59 career-touchdowns…! Wieneke signed a contract with the Minnesota Vikings following these years in school.
“I am no longer a rookie, I have gained confidence in my game. I want to continue our good work with the Alouettes. We built a strong foundation in 2019 and we all want to follow this direction,” says Wieneke on the phone.
The football player took part in workouts in Seattle and Montreal with his teammates over the past year. He studied the offensive game system with the other players to arrive ready for the real camp.
“We’re so excited to be jumping on the field. We’re all happy, it’s really good news. It’s been so long since we’ve played football. We’re really looking forward to see our fans,” he adds.
A new member of the family
A positive point this past year was the birth of his son Israel, who is now 13 months old. Jake had the chance to spend his baby’s first year on his side and he relished every moment. “This is possibly the only happy thing I’ve had with the pandemic. I was with my son every day. I went for training sessions and spent the rest of the time with him. These moments are priceless, especially during the first years of a child“.
In addition to keeping in shape while practicing, Wieneke did teach at Park Center High School near his home in Minnesota. He taught all the general subjects, even French courses. “Don’t rely on that, I am not a reference for this language”, he says laughing! He took the opportunity to get involved with their football team. He guided the receivers based on his great experience.
