“Other teams will need to be ready against us”
During the first steps of the pandemic, American receiver BJ Cunningham remained in the city. He trained young football players and kept fit running outside. It has been said, the 32-year-old has adopted the city and its many addresses and feels right at home after five seasons in the nest.
This year, BJ is antsy and looking forward to lacing up his cleats once more. In 2019, the former NFL player only played six games with the Alouettes due to injury. Living back at home in the United States these past months, BJ is in splendid form. He’s been training intensivelyfor months and he’s confident it will pay off.
“I’m so excited for this season to start, I’m looking at our line-up on paper, both on offence and defence, and we’re full of talent. Other teams will need to be ready against us,” he says.
According to him, each player should be smart in practices and even early games. “Most guys haven’t played in almost two years. You’ll have to push your body but with a certain limit to avoid injuries. Off season training is so important right now, you have to take advantage of it.”
BJ, has been in contact with several of his teammates over the past few months, and when he looks at the team’s minutions at the receiver position, he salivates like a toddler in a candy store.
“Our core is back with me, Geno Lewis (1,133 yards), Quan Bray (818 yards), Jake Wieneke (569 yards). We know the system and we will help others. I like the young players like Dante Absher and Kaion Julien-Grant, who were good for us last year. The acquisition of Naaman Roosevelt (946 yards) is huge for us. He is electrifying and was always hurting us. I look forward to seeing him with the proper jersey on this time.”
According to Cunningham, the return of running back William Stanback (1,048 rushing yards) will greatly help the Alouettes’ offence.
“Will is possibly the best in the league at his position. When he his having a good game, no one wants to be in his way, this guy is a train. I am so happy to have him back, he will contribute to our success.”
And what about Vernon Adams Jr. (3,942 passing yards) who will be well installed at the number one quarterback. “There has been so much instability at this position for too many years, and the fact that Vernon is well secured will help us. First he knows most of the receivers, he is familiar with our game system and we know how he operates. This guy is a leader, he unites us and is so talented. I look forward to the season because I know we will be successful.”
